Take your place at the table

As the cold sweeps over New York, we often find ourselves gathering at restaurants, where warm interiors, comforting food, and strong drinks make the season just a bit easier to handle. And while we have our perennial favorites, we can’t help but be excited about some of the new offerings in New York. From omakase bars and hyper-seasonal menus to nightlife dens-turned-eateries, here are our favorite new restaurants in NYC!

COSME

What: One of the most anticipated restaurants of the year was Cosme, and based on the glowing feedback, it’s delivered on all fronts. Enrique Olvera’s first NYC restaurant is the first of a string of exciting Mexican restaurants that opened this season, and it has locked down the fine dining side of things with a 3,500 square-foot space and unique south-of-the-border fare.

Where: Cosme, 35 E 21st St

Reservations: 212-913-0659

DIRTY FRENCH

What: Dirty French is the newest outpost of Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi, and Jeff Zalaznick’s growing restaurant empire. The trio offers their first foray into French cuisine at the hip Ludlow Hotel, and matches its energy with a vibrant and decadent atmosphere reminiscent of the bustling restaurants of the ’80s. The food is equally rich, and when combined with the see-and-be-seen aura, Dirty French is a winner.

Where: Dirty French, 180 Ludlow St

ALMANAC

What: The hyper-seasonal tasting menu at Chef Glen Zamarra’s new restaurant Almanac is one of the most exciting of the season. The restaurant only uses the freshest ingredients determined by the specific time within a season. The bi-level space which formerly housed Mas (la grillade) has been completely redesigned, with warm and rustic wooden touches throughout and the ever-appealing glass wine cabinet. Artwork from an array of artists will be showcased in the space, but with dishes like monkfish cheek with gouda foam and dates with toffee pudding and salted caramel ice cream, all of our attention will be on the plates.

Where: Almanac, 28 7th Ave S

Reservations: 212-255-1795

HAPPY ENDING

What: While putting a high-end restaurant in what was a massage-parlor-turned-dive-bar might seem like an odd choice, the new Happy Ending got it right, without losing any of the charm or style. French cuisine prepared by Francis Gabarrus, who has worked with fine-dining heavyweights Joel Robuchon and Thomas Keller will be served in the chic upstairs space, but the fun doesn’t end there. Additionally, the team, which includes Oliver Stumm of the perpetually cool Cafe Select and Rintintin, Marlborough Gallery’s Max Levai, and Teddy Perweiler have ensured that the basement bar retains the energy that made the original Happy Ending so popular.

Where: Happy Ending, 302 Broome St

Reservations: 646-998-3184

TIJUANA PICNIC

Tijuana Kitchen ~ NYC 2014

What: Tijuana Picnic adds to the list of new restaurants coming from some of the coolest restaurateurs in town: Acme partners Jon Neidich (Boom Boom Room and the new Happiest Hour), and Jean-Marc Houmard (Indochine) have unveiled the new Mexican spot, which offers casual dishes with fine dining ingredients, such as pork chop marinated in coconut milk and mako shark with green yuzu. The tequila and mezcal cocktail program is run by none other than Jim Kearns, formerly of The NoMad Bar and tequila haven Mayahuel.

Where: Tijuana Picnic, 151 Essex Street

Reservations: 212-219-2000

LA BARBONA

What: Hidden below De Santos in the West Village is La Barbona, a new under-the-radar Mexican eatery tailored for night dwellers. The cantina-style restaurant sticks to traditional Mexican food like tacos and ceviche, made by Chef Michael Hamilton who has worked at hot spots including Acme, The Surf Lodge, and Kingswood. The rest of the team is a mix of downtown creative types, including Up & Down’s Ronnie Flynn and Pravda’s James Huddlestone, who make it an all-in-one eating, drinking, and dancing staple.

Where: La Barbona, 139 W 10th St

Reservations: N/A

LITTLE PARK

What: Grub Street recently compared Andrew Carmellini’s new Little Park to ABC Kitchen, which is reason enough to explore the health-minded yet delectable organic menu. Much like his other winning Tribeca restaurant Locanda Verde, Little Park blends comfort and style with a collection of plates you’ll return to over and over again.

Where: Little Park, 85 W Broadway

Reservations: 212-220-4110

KAPPO MASA

What: Few restaurants in NYC have earned the reputation of Masa, which makes its new, more casual outpost Kappo Masa that much more desirable. Opened with Larry Gagosian right beside his midtown gallery, Kappo Masa brings Masa Takayami’s lust-worthy sashimi to a new crowd of people and serves as the perfect treat after an exhibit viewing.

Where: Kappo Masa, 976 Madison Ave

Reservations: 212-906-7141

SEMILLA

Semilla. Jose-Ramirez Ruiz, a former Per Se chef, focuses on vegetables for the dishes (Semilla is Spanish for seed), but there’s no set menu. Adventurous eaters will be happy to dish out $75 for a prix fixe menu at the communal table, bound to provide a memorable dining experience.

Where: Semilla, 160 Havermeyer St

Reservations: 718-782-3474

 SHUKO

What: We first got a taste of Shuko during their pop-up in the Hamptons over the summer, but the duo of Nick Kim and Jimmy Lau have finally opened the full-fledged version in Greenwich Village. Before opening their own restaurant, the pair of chefs were at Neta, another beloved restaurant nearby, and their new sushi bar is just as enticing.

Where: Shuko, 47 E 12th St

Reservations: 212-228-6088
