Take your place at the table

Inanna's first birthday was February 21st, 2013! It was so surprising, so much has happened in a year's time & at the same time that it feels like it was just yesterday she was resting her entire body in my hands on the car ride home, it also seems like she's been in our family for a lifetime!

& 1 whole year old! Still an explorer and a lot bigger!
For Inanna's first birthday, we decided to have a fun little birthday party for her.  Because it's in the middle of winter, she really misses being able to take walks on the college campus.  But most of all, she misses her best friend Dobby! So, to celebrate her birthday and to treat all the dogs, I decided to make little dog birthday cakes for them! But relatively healthy ones!

These are vegetable layer muffins, with a non-dairy mashed potato icing,
and imitation cheese & olives on top!
(Because olives are Inanna's favorite food)

Birthday Pupcakes:
  1. Preheat oven to 325 F.
  2.  I used the grating tool and later the blade on my food processor and processed 3 large carrots, a small handful of spinach leaves, a whole head of garlic, half an apple peeled & one small yellow squash.  But if you're remaking this at home, you can vary your own vegetables any way you like (please be aware of which vegetables are poison or even bad for dogs though).
  3. Transfer this all to a bowl and add 1/2 cup flour. Mix to incorporate.
  4. Crack one egg into bowl, (when I make these for my dog and bird to share I add the egg shell in the birds portion of the mix, but don't do this for your dog).
  5. Add two mashed bananas to the mixture & mix to incorporate.
  6. This mixture will probably still be too dry for a cupcake consistency.  Slowly add beef, chicken, or vegetable broth 1 Tablespoon at a time until a pour-able consistency is achieved.
  7. Use non-stick (non-fat preferably) cooking spray on a standard cupcake pan and pour 1" of batter into each dish in cupcake pan.
  8. Bake pupcakes until risen and fully cooked through.
mashed+potatoes+icing.jpg
While pupcakes are baking prepare mashed potatoes, I used instant mashed potatoes with chicken broth instead of milk and butter to prepare.  Make them smoother and thinner than usual so they will be suitable as icing.  Prepare at least 2 cups of mashed potatoes.

Once pupcakes are cooled completely, cut each into flat layers.

Begin to "frost" the pupcakes with the creamy and smooth mashed potatoes!

This is the pretty girl Ludo & Ludo's mommy!
She found someone's hat and started wearing it around!
& one of Inanna's toys that she got as a birthday present from her puppy friends!

Dobby loves attention from any hands! He quickly falls over to be petted!
& while Rooky is just being sweet and snuggling with Alex, Nanna's staring jealously from behind!
This was the best birthday party! We all had lots of fun.
Everyone enjoyed the pupcakes lots.
(I made human cupcakes as well).
