Take your place at the table

After my initial post on Breka Cafe, I was contacted by head pastry chef Ann Cao to come in for a private tasting. As a previously impressed patron, I was happy to oblige.

We met, and chatted over a lovely lunch of smoked meat paninis and fresh fruit with granola topped yogurt. The granola is actually made in house, and I’m told it’s frequently asked for by customers who’d like to purchase a whole bag (which sadly, they do not offer at the moment). Vancouver food blogDSC_0086-4

Vancouver food blogWe split the smoked meat panini, which was a very generous portion and more than enough for two people to share.  It was one of the best  sandwiches I’ve had in a while. Perfectly crisped, freshly baked bread. Juicy, tender filling. And just the right amount of greens and spread that doesn’t distract from the main Montreal smoke flavor. It was a pleasant surprise, and highlight of the afternoon. I’ll definitely be back to try and tackle one of these by myself.Vancouver food blogThe fruit & yogurt parfait was refreshing. The yogurt provided a lightly sweetened base to the tart berries, with the granola adding a nice crunch.

I hate when places add the granola beforehand rather than just prior to eating, as it gets soggy and ruins the texture palate.Vancouver food blog   It was great to try some of the savory and non-baked offerings from Breka; I’m now a reaffirmed supporter from the experience. Which is perfect- as they’ve now opened a new location just blocks away from my apartment! Breka Bakery & Cafe at 855 Davie Street is now up and running. Be sure to pop by if you’re in the neighborhood.
