‘Tis the season for cooking! I love holiday baking and cold-weather cooking…or at least I love enjoying the results of all of my holiday baking and cooking. Not only are the foods delicious, but holiday foods are typically about so much more than the dishes themselves. The foods we serve to family and friends throughout the holiday season are a huge part of our traditions, our gift-giving, and even the memories that we take with us from year to year.

I still vividly remember the foods that my family made each Thanksgiving and Christmas. In fact, I still make many of those dishes for my own family now, and I suspect that my kids will do the same when they have families.

The only problem with many of those traditional holiday appetizers, desserts, and other dishes is that they are so time consuming and labor intensive to make. Sometimes I just need a simple treat to bring to a party or concert or to send on a cookie plate to the neighbor’s house.

This week I discovered a recipe so simple and so easy to make that I will adding it to the top of my holiday entertaining list. Did I mention that this recipe uses just 3 simple ingredients? It is tasty with a hint of spiciness, and if the fact that they disappeared almost immediately is any indication, I’d say everyone loved them.

Amazingly, the ham and pepper jack pinwheels that I made this week were eaten before a different sweet variety with cinnamon and frosting. That tells you that these little babies were amazing!

Another bonus – have you ever noticed that holiday get togethers seem to be heavy on the sweets…and that the savory appetizers always go fast? These are sure to be the hit of your next party!

Ingredients

  • 1 package of Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Sheets (2 sheets)
  • 5 pieces of thickly sliced deli ham
  • 1 cup shredded pepper jack cheese

Instructions

  1. Thaw pastry sheets at room temperature for about 40 minutes or until they are easy to handle and unfold. Heat oven to 400° F and lightly grease 2 baking sheets.
  2. Gently unfold pastry sheets, one at a time, on lightly floured surface. Place ham slices side by side so that they cover the entire width of the pastry sheet (you don’t have to cover the entire pastry sheet with ham, but you certainly can!).
  3. Sprinkle ½ cup shredded pepper jack cheese over the entire pastry sheet.
  4. Roll the pastry sheet so you’re rolling along the long side – be sure to keep your roll tight so that it keeps it’s shape when sliced (tighter than the picture below!). Place the rolled pastry in the freezer for about 10 minutes to make it easier to slice.
  5. Slice the pastry roll into 20 half-inch slices. Place cut side down on baking sheet. Repeat with the second pastry sheet.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese is bubbly. Serve warm or at room temperature.

I am particularly fond of pepper jack cheese, and I think that the little kick that the pepper jack added was a huge bonus…but if spicy is not your thing, then it’s totally ok to substitute your favorite cheese instead!
