Why do we need another non-profit organization in this area!? Well, the answer is simple . . . to promote the incredible independent businesses that we have making this such a special area. Taking a cue from Asheville Independent Restaurant Association, Black Mountain has created a similar organization. The difference is that they have included independent artists and Galleries as well.
It is not an easy task to get independent businesses that compete with each other to look beyond that difference and find a common reason to work together. If, by working together, they promote themselves to more possible customers and tourists â then they all win by gaining that additional business. They also create a stronger voice to help compete against the large chain brand stores that have National campaigns and huge advertising budgets.
This is another story about Western North Carolina promoting local business and keeping a larger share of the dollars spent in Western North Carolina.Â
âBuy Localâ is good business!

Following is the press release that was sent out in November 2012:
A new advocate for Black Mountain business has landed. Black Mountain BAR â Arts and Restaurants Association, Inc. (BAR), an independent Business Alliance has formed, and they are looking for you to join them!
Bar is the brainchild of John Richardson and Cappi Macsherry to share with all, what the locals and frequent tourists already know â Black Mountain has a wealth of eateries, bars, artists and galleries. John, owner of Black Mountain Ale House and Cappi, owner of AnTHM Gallery and local art curator, enlisted the support of Bud Rainey & Kris Hegge of Louiseâs Kitchen, Joel Lenk of Dark City Deli, and Kenny & Murphy Capps of Kudzu Branding & Design to organize a complimentary trade association with a strong voice for locally-owned businesses and individuals.
According to John Richardson, âThe need has never been greater for a strong community business group that generates success through shared media and event opportunities. Not only do we want to showcase the incredible food and drink scene in Black Mountain, but pairing it back with the established, and emerging, âartâ presence here is so important.
In many ways, Black Mountain is a community continues to brim with some of the best talent in the southeast. Combining support of the food/drink/art world only makes sense.
BAR is the platform to both elevate and share this story.â Bi-annual festivals, collective branding, creative advertising, shared promotional events, free business listings, educational seminars, and monthly newsletters are just some of the many stated benefits of membership. BAR is affiliated with the American Independent Business Alliance, and thus has the support of IBAs all over the United States.
According to the BAR website (
www.BlackMountainBar.com) âBARâs mission is to uphold and promote the cultural scene and flavor of downtown Black Mountain as a culinary, arts and libation destination. BAR leads the way in marketing and branding Black Mountain, building upon the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Black Mountain, and other area advocacy groups. BARâs membership dues, sponsorships, website, and proceeds from our bi-annual Signature Events will fund our continuous efforts to promote and spotlight Black Mountain and its top-rated Arts & Restaurants scene. We invite you to partake! BAR is a 501 (c) 6 organization.â
