Irishcoffee-1

When I used to think of Irish Coffee, images of weak coffee, harsh whiskey, huge mounds of whipped cream and an underlying taste of a pre-made Irish cream liqueur came flooding into my mind.  That’s because every Irish coffee I’ve ever had at a restaurant had apparently all been wrong.  Well, no more.  I have a recipe that will show you how to make an authentic Irish coffee to enjoy at home, the way St. Paddy intended.  It has four basic ingredients which combine to create an absolutely delicious beverage with the utmost in creamy drinkability.

I haven’t been to Ireland yet to experience a true Irish coffee direct from the source.  I did, however, make a pilgrimage to an authentic Irish bar in Manhattan earlier this year.  The bartender, who was as Irish as his brogue, showed me how to make a real Irish coffee.  He gave me tips like, the coffee should be made in a glass, never a mug, and it should have only four basic ingredients: coffee, Irish whiskey, demerara sugar and heavy cream.  By the way, I love the fact that it’s made with demerara sugar because we use it all the time at home.  Demerara sugar is a wonderful unrefined and raw sugar with a molasses-like flavor.  It’s available in most grocery stores now but if you can’t find it, just substitute regular brown sugar.

The coffee is important, of course, and should be fresh brewed and strong.  I prefer to brew it using a French press because I think it produces an ideal coffee to use in this recipe.  It takes a little more time, but it’s worth it.  The Irish whiskey can be whichever brand you prefer and like.  Also, the topping should always be made with fresh cream, never canned pre-made whipped cream.  The fresh heavy cream is only lightly whipped so it can be poured as a layer to completely cover the top of the coffee.

This Irish coffee is so good, it seriously makes me want to add cream and alcohol to my coffee every morning.  I don’t know how productive I’d be for the rest of the day if I drank this in the morning, but at least my coffee would taste great and I’d start the day pretty happy!  :)
