Jerk Chicken Burger Recipe

If you like a bit of heat you will love this easy chicken burger recipe with jerk seasoning. You can make it as hot as you like it.

It can be hard to get chicken burgers to be really tasty, but this mix of savory, spicy seasonings do the trick. They bring the flavors of the Caribbean to the table in just minutes.

Nutmeg and cinnamon in a burger recipe may sound pretty strange, but they are essential to that familiar jerk seasoning taste, so don't leave them out. Of course you can adjust the amount of heat to the level you are comfortable with.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken or turkey
  • 2 jalapeno peppers or 1/2 teaspoon hot red chili flakes
  • 1 or 2 limes
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon each nutmeg, cinnamon and salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons oil

Method

Step 1

Place the ground chicken or turkey in a medium-sized bowl. Seed and finely chopped the peppers and add them to the meat. Finely grate 2 teaspoons of peel from the lime and squeeze out 1 tablespoon of juice. Add it to the meat, along with the garlic, cayenne, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt. Using your hands or a fork, mix it together just until everything is evenly combined.

Step 2

Shape the mixture into four burgers, each about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 3

Heat oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the burgers and cook until browned on both sides about four minutes per side, then reduce the heat to medium low. Add a little more oil, if needed. Cover and cook until the burgers feel firm when pressed with your finger and no pink remains in the center, from 2 to 4 more minutes per side.

Serves 4.

Split hamburger buns and toast, if you like, then place the burgers on the buns. These island style burgers are great topped with sliced tomatoes, lettuce and tangy coleslaw.

To Barbecued the Burgers: Generously oil a grill and preheat the barbecue to medium. Grill the burgers with lid closed until they feel firm when pressed and no pink remains in the center, from 7 to 12 minutes per side.

Variations:

  • Use scotch bonnet peppers if you really like heat, but remember they are EXTREMELY hot.
  • Make it low carb by skipping the bun and just adding lots of veggies to your meal.
  • Cool the burgers down by topping them with chopped pineapple or an easy pineapple salsa.

If you love the flavors of the islands you will love this jerk chicken burger recipe.
