Itâs always been a tradition of ours to spend Christmas with my family and Thanksgiving with my husbands family. Over the years, family has grown up, moved away, gotten married and started their own family traditions. This year was the first year that we spent Thanksgiving with my husbands family. The weather was bad, so we had a small group this year and I have to say I really enjoyed it. My daughter and I decided this year that we would come over early and help Nana cook. Taylor is 17 years old and will be a Senior in high school next year. I feel like my time with her has completely flown by.
Taylor loves to help in the kitchen and is eager to learn how to cook. I watched from afar as Nana and Taylor cut up and prepared the salad. They were talking about college. Nana always has a special way of getting Taylor excited about school and you could tell Taylor was soaking it all up like a little sponge.
Once the salad was done, they started making Nanaâs Homemade Whipped Cream. I have never made nor eaten fresh homemade whipped cream before. As Nana gave Taylor the ingredients the conversation about school continued. âDid you order your class ring?â Nana said. âYes and dad is going this week to reserve a parking space for me at schoolâ Taylor replied. OMG.. it hit me! My baby girl is growing up and she could very well be out of the house soon. Right then and there a new tradition was born. I was going to make it a point to get Taylor in the kitchen every single time I was cooking. While learning simple cooking skills and recipes that she can pass on to her children, we were going to spend time doing some bonding.
Aunt Ruth also spent some time with us in the kitchen. Aunt Ruth would be Taylorâs great great Aunt and is in her 80â²s. She hasnât been feeling so well lately so it was really nice to see her in good spirits. Aunt Ruth shared some memories of her and Uncle Darrell, who has passed away as we fixed up some appetizers to munch on while we waited for lunch to be served. We made bacon wrapped little smokies, layered dip and more. The room was filled with smiles and laughter. Where there is food there is a conversation, where there is conversation, memories are made.
I am so glad that this year our Thanksgiving didnât end up like this:
