Rejoice my friends, National Doughnut Day is June 3rd, this Friday! Wooohooo!

Is there a better holiday than one that celebrates a beautiful round little cake with a hole in the middle?
Answer: no there isn’t

This sweet holiday was started in 1938, when the The Salvation Army in Chicago created a fundraiser to help the needy during the Great Depression, as well as to honor the Women who made doughnuts for the World War I soldiers to help boost their morale. These Women, also known as Doughnut Lassies or Doughnut Girls, began with patting the dough by hand but later employed a wine bottle as a rolling pin (we’ve all been there and done that with a wine bottle, right?). They also didn’t have fancy doughnut cutters or baking pans, so the cut the dough with a knife and twisted the strips to form a cruller shape. After several solders asked if they could make a doughnut with a hole in it, the traditional doughnut shape as we know it today was created.
