Take your place at the table

What a great Holiday tradition that is usually known for Christmas but I think it goes with Thanksgiving even better. I always thought there was more to it but roasting chestnuts is really very easy to do. If you’ve never tried it, they are a treat with an unexpected sweetness that will make them a family tradition for you too.

Ingredients

1 Lb Chestnuts

Directions

Preheat oven to 425°F or set and light your coals in your grill. Either way they are delicious but the grill can add extra flavor into the chestnuts.

Using a sharp knife cut an X into the flat side of the chestnut completely through the shell.

Oven: Place cut chestnuts on a cookie sheet in the oven for about 30 – 40 minutes depending on the size of the chestnuts. In order for the chestnuts to cook evenly, shake the cookie sheet a few times to turn the nuts.

Grill: Place cut chestnuts on the grill (aluminum foil can be used to make it flat but not necessary). Rotate the nuts frequently to ensure they are evenly cooked. Be sure to inspect them regularly so they do not burn.

Note: To add specific flavors you can place smoking wood on top of the coals. Suggestions include: hickory, cherry, applewood, mesquite or your favorite.

Stovetop: Place cut chestnuts in a cast-iron pan and place lid on top. Roast over a low heat until they are done. Be sure to turn the chestnuts frequently so they cook evenly. This should take about 10 minutes.

When the chestnuts are roasted set them aside until they are cool enough to handle. Peel roasted chestnuts while they are still warm. They are more difficult to peel if you wait until the nuts have cooled.

These can be a savory addition to recipes as well but they usually don’t get past popping them in our mouths.
