Antiguan cuisine varies from casual to creative, West Indian cooking methods mix with international fare to create bold unique delicious extraordinary dining experiences. Dining in Antigua is all about tasting authentic Caribbean flavors while you relax and take in the clear blue ocean view. The food in Antigua and Barbuda reflects the island’s rich cultural heritage. Spicy Creole dishes meet traditional English fare and local ingredients.

Fresh catches are amongst Antigua's gastronomic specialties including spiny lobster, red snapper, conch, shrimp and a variety of other fish. Additionally, you will find all types of international cuisine including French, Italian, American, and food from all over the world in Antigua and Barbuda. And, you can pick up excellent street food on the islands including barbeque chicken, fish and rotis. Spots around St John’s and English Harbour are a good spot to find food vendors.

The specialty dish of Antiguan cuisine is goat water. The name is a bit misleading as this spicy stew seasoned with hot peppers, cloves and cinnamon, is hearty and will have you coming back for more. Roti is another typical dish found on the islands. Another favorite is a “sweet n’ salty” entree known as ducana, a savory mixture of grated sweet potato, pumpkin puree, coconut, cornmeal, sugar and spices which are steamed in banana leaves and served as an accompaniment to a tomato-based salt fish stew.

Below is a breakdown of authentic Antiguan dishes you have to visit Antigua to experience:

• Fungee (cornmeal and okra dumplings).
• Pepperpot (hearty vegetable stew with salted meat often served with fungee).
• Roti (patties filled with curried potatoes, chicken or beef).
• Ducana (grated sweet potato mixed with coconut, sugar and spices and steamed in a banana leaf. Often served with chop up mashed aubergine, okra and saltfish).
• Tamarind balls (local sweets).
• AntiguaBlack pineapple (pineapples famous throughout the East Caribbean for their unique, extra-sweet flavour).
• Callaloo (dark green vegetable often served as soup).
• Johnny cakes (a kind of doughnut, usually served as breakfast with salted codfish and chopped up).

Aside from the amazing cuisine, Antigua and Barbuda have a lot to offer. The island is warm with steady winds, a complex coastline of harbors, and beautiful coral reef. Partake in the local national sport of cricket, swim with stingrays at "Stingray City", take advantage of one of their many all-inclusive resorts, go out and have fun with some water sports, or just sit back and relax on the beach. Antigua and Barbuda have it all!
