Take your place at the table

The hustle and bustle of the school year is upon us and we hope your family is starting to adjust to new schedules. We know you are getting up earlier, continually shopping, and possibly making lunches half asleep. For parents who like to try to stay organized during this time, you are probably planning schedules and meals.

This is why we developed Time For Dinner. Each week, we plan the dinners, menus, and shopping list for you.

But what about breakfast? You want something nutritious (it is an important meal) and also quick so everyone can get out the door on time.

What might be good breakfasts for your kids can depend on a wide range of issues. You’ll have to do your best to match the puzzle pieces together to come up with breakfasts that meet your child’s needs without overburdening your time or budget. The desire to eat early in the morning varies on the individual child and can change with age, so what might work now may not work later.

Do not feel guilty about the american staples...a bowl of cereal with a banana, a frozen waffle with fresh fruit (not too much syrup), and of course a scrambled egg is always good for some protein in the am. But when those get boring, you

  1. Quick breakfast parfait - a bit of yogurt, granola, and fresh fruit.
  2. A piece cheese and some homemade trail mix.
  3. Peanut butter on half an english muffin.
  4. Mini bagel (they're the perfect size!) with cream cheese and fresh strawberries.

You can also explore a vast array of healthy muffin options. It may take a little time and experimentation to find out which muffins your children like, which ones are actually healthy and then of course easy to make. Most muffins you buy are empty calorie bombs but they need not be like that. Healthy muffins have many upsides, including the fact you don’t need to make them in the morning (you have enough to do). Make them when you have the time and freeze them. Warm them up in the morning in a microwave and serve them with fruit, yogurt or nuts. Last year, a member asked for a healthy breakfast cookie. After some recipe testing I provided her with a recipe for Blueberry Oat Breakfast Cookies. She reported back that they were a hit!

Getting young and older children out the door in the morning can be just as hard as getting all members of your family gathered around your dinner table. It takes planning and dedication to the cause - we recommend directing your determination to simplicity and nutrition.
