My Injury

If you are just starting to follow my blog you maybe don’t know about my injury.

After many years of training injury free this last year I had a full pec tear on my left chest while doing a bench press. After the incident I waited about month until finally I went to see a doctor.

I thought it was just muscle soreness but I ended up needing to have surgery. After my surgery, even though I was still trying to go to the gym at least 5 days a week and do what I could, I still did put on some pounds of fat.

I knew it would probably happen because first, my body was used to burning all the calories I was eating into energy for my active lifestyle and since I was not doing much, it just sat there and turned into fat.

Setting New Goals

Now let’s get to the point. The time I took off from my workouts made me think better about my lifestyle and set new goals.

I got kind of tired of trying to look big and very muscular. One thing I always loved, just as much as I love fitness and fashion, was “looking big”.

I didn’t have a bodybuilder type of body but weighing 185 pounds for a 5’8 guy is a little too much.

The dress shirt didn’t fit nice; I was having to buy new jeans every month and if I wore a suit, I would look like a body guard, which is ok if that’s your goal.

When I recovered from the surgery, I started to work out again, follow a more restrict diet and do cardio but my body didn’t respond as it used to.

Also I was eating less calories than I used to and working harder than before. So I started checking everything I was eating and all seemed right from my experience.

The Change

One day I decided to take a hard step and stop taking my whey protein and most of my other supplements that I was taking. Boom… I started losing weight ( losing fat ).

You might say, you just dropped your calories intake by lowering your protein. NO! I continued to have the same amount of protein daily but now from a more reliable source.

Most of my protein sources are now from meat, chicken, egg whites, etc and I still open to eat something that is not healthy once in a while during the week.

I am feeling leaner and cleaner inside. I don’t know about you, but when you start eating healthier and organic food, your body functions better and that’s how I feel.

I am not saying that the only reason you may be getting fat is your whey protein or another supplement.

What I am trying to tell you from many years of experience, and for the body goal that I am trying to achieve now, I saw a lot of changes when I stopped taking those supplements.

If you take a good look at the label on your whey protein, you will notice that there are many ingredients that you don’t even know and some that you know for been very bad for your health, including corn syrup.

Whey Protein:

I am not even taking it for my post workout meal. I go home and eat a good solid meal and that’s it. [pull_quote_left]”Is the Window of Opportunity ( the time you have to take your whey protein within 30 min after your workout ) fake then?”[/pull_quote_left]  I will tell you, I saw no difference in my body when I had a solid meal instead of drinking a whey protein after my workout.

My doctor also opened my eyes a little about supplementation; “Why do you need to supplement with vitamin pills if you are getting all the vitamins you need from your veggies and fruit?”.

You will need these extras if you have the chicken and brown rice diet mentality and all you eat is processed supplements.

By the way, I read this week that you may not be getting the vitamins you paid for according to this article from Forbes.com

The point of this blog is not that you should stop taking whey protein or any other product. I am just trying to be open because that was something

I used to share with you guys. It was very hard in the beginning to make this move because this is something I always did and saw other fitness athletes do as well.

You just need to understand that most of the athletes you follow are sponsored by a company and “what they are taking” can be just an advertising for that company.

If you are eating clean, working hard and not dropping the weight you want, give it a try but don’t forget to replace it with another protein source.
