Happy July 4th (tomorrow) everyone!! Time to celebrate our independence with family and friends by eating and drinking way too much while enjoying pretty fireworks. Hope all my Canadian friends had a very happy Canada Day this week too. I just love the month of July and all of itâs celebrations. I especially love the July 4th holiday because my birthday is two days later (wooohooo!) Every year my birthday is celebrated during a long 3-4 day holiday stretch (like Iâm doing this weekend! Yay me!!). Being born around the fourth of July is awesome since everyone is in the celebrating mood anyways and thereâs always a fun happening party or event. Schoolâs out, summer vaca is on, weatherâs beautiful, beach water is warm, paid work day due to the holiday, good excuse to eat and drink a lot, etc. I think itâs the best time of the year.
Letâs imagine, itâs tomorrow and you are at a July 4th party. You want wine but you know a frozen drink would be much more enjoyable on this hot, summer day. Well, you can have your wine and frozen drink tooâ¦in a Wine Slushy! As much as Iâd like to take credit for this perfect alcoholic concoction, I canât. The idea of a wine slushy has been around for quite awhile now but Iâve never actually tried one. My Mom, who knows me too well, sent over this article and told me to make it and write about it. Honesty, I was a little uninspired going into this recipe because I thought: 1) how could I love wine any more than I already do so whatâs the point of freezing it, 2) what a pain to have to freeze the wine and then blend it up to have it taste just like wine. Yeah, Iâm a little lazy like that. After a few weeks of holding this recipe, I finally went for it and the result was that it turned my wine into the super cool drunk uncle of a 7-11 slurpee. OMG, I love this drink! I love it so much that crazy ideas were going through my mind like, how could I have a full-time job driving around a wine slushy drink truck?, and, is this acceptable to drink this as a dessert replacement every day? My liver and I thank you, Mom.
Another truth is that Iâm a slightly embarrassed to write this recipe post. I mean, come on, this is hands down the easiest drink in the world to put together. How do you write about freezing some wine into cubes, slushing it up in a blender, and pouring it into a glass and make it sound interesting? I feel like I should be talking about the science of freezing wine and something-something about the molecular structure, but really all you do is just freeze the wine and blend it. It ainât rocket science but it is a damn good drink, especially on a sunny day and by a pool. Pool or no pool, Iâm pretty sure Iâll be drinking/enjoying this wine slushy all summer long.
For my wine slushy, I used straight up pinot noir because itâs the bottle I already had open. At first I was hesitant to use it, thinking that type of red wine would be too strong and not fruity enough. Then I thought, pinot noir is my favorite wine so, alright, if it sucks Iâll just let it melt and then drink it as regular wine (genius brain working here folks, canât stop it even if I wanted to). No worries because my slushy was everything a frozen drink should be, so refreshing and delicious. It was simple and easy to crush the wine cubes too, as they donât fully freeze due to the alcohol. A few pulses of my immersion stick blender and my slushy was really to drink. Party on!
A Wine Slushy is the perfect drink to enjoy this July 4th holiday and all summer long.
